In the past, the main problem of smuggling, counterfeiting and commercial crimes happened by businesses trading at commercial locations connected to physical details. With the changes in technology in SA, this had already changed and continues to change at a rapid rate as our bandwidth speed improves, to a criminal environment in cyber space.
SAFACT has put together a joint team of knowledgeable and specialized members consisting of mainstream industry members and relevant government departments to tackle this problem from a rights holders’ perspective.
Functions of the SAFACT e-Task Team include:
Profiling (Discovery), which includes crawling, searching, scanning, identifying, recording; accurate statistics; automation and individualisation Compliance & Investigation, which comprises legal letters, creation of suitable C&D notices for specific jurisdictions; issue C&D’s, address non-compliance and resolve (ISP & host sites relationship); obtain take down tools from ISP’s and host sites and awareness and litigation.
As monitoring, investigations, compiling of evidence packs and enforcement on the internet is a relatively new concept to rights owners and law enforcement,
Reporting activities, which entails analysis, statistics & metrics and identification of hot-spots.
Piracy equally affects all industry players. Broadband Internet is the most significant enabler of piracy, because of increased user data consumption due to less limitations and lower costs and an increased number of people that have access to the internet and piracy techniques. It is not accidental! There is always a syndicate, advertiser, website operator or a manufacturer somewhere who makes money, living off the investment and efforts and creativity of legitimate content rights holders. We need your support!
